Drawing Restraint 9

watched matthew barney and bjork's first collaboration piece friday night at the nuart. i have seen some of barney's cremaster cycles, and i knew not to expect nothing more than a strange experience, let alone an entry into an obscure sculptural art world. the images here are stunning. watching the petroleum jelly sculpture slowly take form was calming and beautiful. each shot was meticulously drawn out and you start noticing that anything done very slowly can be perceived as something sexual. that is barney.

warning: the film has no dialogue, except for the tea ceremony scene. but don't stray away because there is no dialogue. that's one of the beautiful qualities of this piece. bjork offers her harrowing vocals in the soundtrack and to no surprise, it is the sound that gives the imagery an eerie yet alluring quality.

pretentious? yes. obscure? yes. but like i said, that's barney.

it's not a good feeling. this place is strangely creepy and it doesn't help that a picture of bowie looking at himself in the mirror hangs above my head. the grill at the bottom of my bathroom door hints at an older decade, and as i change out of my clothes i begin to wonder what lurked behind them sixty years ago. i do this as fast as possible.

modernity meets age, scent of paint lingers throughout the dark narrow halls. closed off sections fortell refurbishment but also hidden pasts. you could easily get lost.

a cabinet drawer blocks an eerie compartment in the wall right next to my head. why a hole is there is beyond my comprehension, but hopefully it serves a maintenance purpose that i'm not aware of. nevertheless, i'm not sure i'll be getting any sleep tonight.

the 9th floor is infamous. though it brings chills, i'm still curious. i dare not go alone but i'm still tempted to. our earlier attempt was cut short because closed doors, a banging elevator door, and a hole in the wall (yet again) gave us signs of "no entry". it definitely felt abandoned.

passing through, i avoid any type of mirror or reflections. this is hard because mirrors and reflections are at every turn. i find myself keeping a persistent eye on the glazed tile floors.

2 floors below 9 now. good night monty .

What Sarah Said

Tuesday came. Death Cab For Cutie just released their most recent project, a dvd compilation of 12 original short films inspired by songs off of the band’s latest release. Notice I don’t describe them as music videos because all of these pieces are made by lesser known directors expressing their unique interpretations in a less conventional way - some come from a commercial background, some as visual effects experts, and others have never been video directors at all. Being a huge fan of Jeffrey Brown’s comics (he lends his in "Your Heart is An Empty Room"), I had to pick this dvd up.

But it was Laurent Briet's piece that left me miserable. I'm using miserable here as a compliment. Maybe I was sensitive at the time I was watching it, but Briet's images are provoking, emotional, mysterious, and raw. Definitely stunning and my favorite out of the bunch. I don't think him being French has anything to do with it???

Here's a glimpse of his treatment.

The French version of 'loves me, loves me not' is much longer, and goes like this:
she/he loves me ....
a little ....
a lot ....
passionately ....
insanely ....
not at all ....

No arbitrary performances, less narrative, abstract - this is Directions.

I'm Happy Because I'm Stupid

boystickers
it made me young. it made me happy. it made me forget.

last night went to catch theboyleastlikelyto at spaceland. what an amaaazing set. the brits really know how to do it. they are such great storytellers and entertainers. i felt like a little kid again. and now, my new-found obsession with finger puppets has grown even more. most memorable were the high claps, the jumps, that vibrating "toy", and their rendition of "eye of the tiger".

and yes,i took a poster and came home with stickers because i CAN be that twelve year old.

thx coffee_snorter for coming out.

currently singing "i'm glad i hitched my apple wagon to your star"

Catcher

Sony came out with a new digicam yesterday - the cybershot DSC-T30. I want it, considering my Nikolai is running out of date. The time delay drives me nuts!! Anyway, this one is quite sexy and it'll be available next month. Read the specs here.
