Drawing Restraint 9

watched matthew barney and bjork's first collaboration piece friday night at the nuart. i have seen some of barney's cremaster cycles, and i knew not to expect nothing more than a strange experience, let alone an entry into an obscure sculptural art world. the images here are stunning. watching the petroleum jelly sculpture slowly take form was calming and beautiful. each shot was meticulously drawn out and you start noticing that anything done very slowly can be perceived as something sexual. that is barney.

warning: the film has no dialogue, except for the tea ceremony scene. but don't stray away because there is no dialogue. that's one of the beautiful qualities of this piece. bjork offers her harrowing vocals in the soundtrack and to no surprise, it is the sound that gives the imagery an eerie yet alluring quality.

pretentious? yes. obscure? yes. but like i said, that's barney.

watch the trailer .
